I can humiliate or humor

I took this picture on January 15, 2022. Jim was finishing up that last bedroom. The one with the window he was fond of posting about. Wasn’t he cute? He thought that would be the last of the flooring, but my work being done in that room I started in on the laundry room. Needless to say it now has a new floor as well. Thank you Jimmy! I am keeping that toolbelt forever.

One of Jimmy’s favorite quotes is this one by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. After he found it, he tried to live by it. He had it pinned up in his office. He took it to heart. I thought I’d share it with you.

“I have come to the frightening conclusion that I am the decisive element. It is my personal approach that creates the climate. It is my daily mood that makes the weather possess tremendous power to make life miserable or joyous.

I can be a tool of torture or an inspiration, I can humiliate or humor, hurt or heal. In all situations, it is my response that decides whether a crisis is escalated or de-escalated, and a person is humanized or de-humanized.

If we treat people as they are, we make them worse. If we treat people as they ought to be, we help them to become what they are capable of becoming.”
