Alumni weekend looms ahead

Jim, of course, labeled his favorite photos! This is from the Omaha Tournament April 19, 1975, N.P. Dodge Park.
University of Nebraska “A” Side
Back row: Jack Neary, RJ Neary, Jim Cunningham, Vince Powers, Craig Pohlman, Dan Vapenik, Larry Botts, Tami Satell
Front row: Roger Leyse, Bill Coffey, Randy Kissler, Mike Potter, John Shultz, Craig Lyons, Mark Lyons.

I have been going through photos the past few days for the banquet part of the festivities. Bill M. told me there will be an In Memoriam section so I sent a few of my favorites. To tell the truth the containers of photos and jerseys that went to his service had been stowed in the basement closet this whole time.

I pulled this one out. It was special to him. He remembered that team fondly. Some of those men remained important figures in his and, by extension, my life. Many were on iterations of Lincoln City, Omaha Rugby and The G.O.A.T.S. Some of them traveled the world with us as Brisbane Bustards. Some were biking buddies. Without a doubt each one he would have still considered a friend after all these years.

I am asked if I want to speak when they hand out this year’s Jim Cunningham Scholarship. I can just say congratulations to the lucky rugger(s) or I can say a little something. I think if I decide to speak a good idea would be to refer to this team and the lasting friendships rugby gave Jim.  I wonder if other sports create the same kind of comradery? They must. I hope so.
